Perhaps, if he had known that Adele had stood at the gate on that unlucky night, where she had followed, lingering, to await the return of her brother and lover, wondering why they had chosen so tempestuous an hour and so black a spot to hold converse--if he had known that a sudden flash of lightning had revealed to her sight that short, sharp struggle as Victor was sinking under his hands, he might have explained everything, and she--....

O. Henry’s unique style of writing will introduce you to story filled of mystery, suspense and of course a decision. A decision which will lead a certain main character to three roads of which he must choose from. A collection of 22 short stories: „Roads of Destiny”, „The Guardian of the Accolade”, „The Discounters of Money”, „The Enchanted Profile”, „Next to Reading Matter”, „Art and the Bronco”, „Phobe”, „A Double-dyed Deceiver”, „The Passing of Black Eagle”, „A Retrieved Reformation” and others. The title story of the volume „Roads of Destiny”, a story allegorical in nature, deals with that all important moment of choice: the decision to act, speak, or dress in a way which seems to determine the whole course of a life. O. Henry builds his own concept suggesting that the choice is not so much among different fates as among different versions of the same fate.

"A collection of short stories, some funny, with twist endings. O.Henry's style is witty, but sometimes difficult to understand. He often introduces his stories with his view on American history and society, which is not always easy to understand for the modern reader. The stories are inventive and creative. A nice discovery." - Paul Groos

Sixes and Sevens / O. Henry. - [miejsce nieznane] : KtoCzyta.pl : Legimi, 2019.

Forma i typ
„Sixes and Sevens” is a first collection of humorous short stories from the author of „The Four Million”, his stories deal for the most part with ordinary people: clerks, policemen and waitresses and often use twist endings which turn on an ironic or coincidental circumstance in his stories. O. Henry proves that he is the master of the short story format. This collection has quirky as well as nice little stories, each differing in style from the other. Most of his stories are set in his contemporary present, the early years of the 20th century. Many take place in New York. Fans of classic short fiction will relish this collection of gems from one of the unquestioned masters of the form, O. Henry. It’s a must-read for anyone in need for a dose of entertaining, worthwhile writing.

Spring was taking its time to arrive in the city, and with no letter from her fiance in weeks, Sarah's quite wilted. "In a faint, golden glow from her dandeleonine dream, she fingered the typewriter keys absently for a little while, with her mind and heart in the meadow lane with her young farmer." Sarah was crying over her bill of fare. Think of a New York girl shedding tears on the menu card!.. O. Henry's short stories are well known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings.

Written by famed author O. Henry (William Sydney Porter) in 1910, these are 25 more short stories of the Four Million, including the titled story „Strictly Business”, „The Thing’s the Play,” „The Call of the Tame,” „Psyche and the Pskyscraper” and others. This collection of short stories brings together a motley cast of characters from all walks of life – stage actors, blackmailers, soldiers, waitresses, and average citizens – and adds in an array of unexpected plot twists and other surprises. O. Henry uses powerful language, themes speaking of the social classes in New York during this era, and often vivid imagery. The setting of the early 1900’s New York provides an interesting backdrop for the stories. Overall, O. Henry’s work is fascinating and provides quick relief from stresses in everyday life. For fans of short fiction, it doesn’t get much better than this.

This carefully crafted ebook: "The Complete O. Henry Short Stories (Rolling Stones + Cabbages and Kings + Options + Roads of Destiny + The Four Million + The Trimmed Lamp + The Voice of the City + Whirligigs and more)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. William Sydney Porter (1862–1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings. Most of O. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many take place in New York City and deal for the most part with ordinary people: clerks, policemen, waitresses, etc. O. Henry's work is wide-ranging, and his characters can be found roaming the cattle-lands of Texas, exploring the art of the con-man, or investigating the tensions of class and wealth in turn-of-the-century New York. O. Henry had an inimitable hand for isolating some element of society and describing it with an incredible economy and grace of language. Some of his best and least-known work is contained in Cabbages and Kings, a series of stories each of which explores some individual aspect of life in a paralytically sleepy Central American town, while advancing some aspect of the larger plot and relating back one to another. Henry's short stories are well known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings. In his day he was called the American answer to Guy de Maupassant. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many take place in New York City and frequently feature characters with blue-collar jobs, such as policemen and waitresses. "The Cop and the Anthem" has only one character who is given a name, the protagonist "Soapy." It is made clear that Soapy is homeless, one of the underclass men and women who flocked to New York City during the earliest years of the twentieth century. The short story's narrative is set in an unstated day in late fall. Soapy faces the urgent necessity of finding some sort of shelter for the winter. He is psychologically experienced in thinking of Blackwell's Island, the local jail, as a de facto winter homeless shelter, and the narrative shows him developing a series of tactics intended to encourage the police to classify him as a criminal and arrest him. O. Henry's short stories are well known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings.

You think O. Henry and you think unexpected twist and romances and happy endings, but one thing that really struck me throughout all these New York stories is that O. Henry's world is really very dangerous and very scary. People could literally starve to death, regularly brawl in the streets, be ruined by a husband, resort to suicide and that very present loneliness of the big city, which enables the cute turns, but also presents very real risks...

The Four Million O. Henry - Written in 1906 when roughly four million people lived in New York City, it opens with a reference to Ward McAllister's "assertion that there were only "400" people in New York City who were really worth noticing. To O. Henry, however, everyone in New York counted. He had an obvious affection for the city, which he called "Bagdad-on-the-Subway".

O. Henry (whose real name is William Sydney Porter) is famous for his many short stories of everyday-life America, full of wit, charm, and inventiveness. This collection of classic tales set on the wrong side of the law showcases a master craftsman at the top of his form. „The Gentle Grafter” is a collection of 14 short stories about grafters who travel, peddle and swindle in the South. Those grafters have different business ethics and moral senses, and their artistic plots lead them to an unsuspected but comic ending. Each chapter is either told by an anonymous narrator or by Jeff Peters and Andy Tucker, two other con men. All of the con work was done somewhere within the United States. With the surprising twists and turns, not to mention the wit and humor throughout the book, „The Gentle Grafter” will leave the reader smiling and asking for more.

O. Henry is the pen name of American writer William Sydney Porter (1862-1910). Porter's 400 short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, characterization and the clever use of twist endings. He traveled to Austin in 1884, where he took a number of different jobs over the next several years, first as pharmacist then as a draftsman, bank teller and journalist. He also began writing as a sideline to employment. Porter's most prolific writing period started in 1902, when he moved to New York City to be near his publishers. He wrote 381 short stories while living there. He wrote a story a week for over a year for the New York World Sunday Magazine. His wit, characterization and plot twists were adored by his readers, but often panned by the critics. Yet, he went on to gain international recognition and is credited with defining the short story as a literary art form. His works include: Cabbages and Kings (1904), The Four Million (1906), Heart of the West (1907), The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories of the Four Million (1907), The Voice of the City: Further Stories of the Four Million (1908), The Gentle Grafter (1908) and Roads of Destiny (1909).
