„Flower Fables” is Louisa May Alcott’s first book, penned at 16. She created the fanciful stories for the amusement of the daughter of a family friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Miss Alcott loved and was well acquainted with flowers, insects, birds and animals of the meadows and forest. From these beauties she spun adventures of enchanting nature’s woodland fairies, telling them to children of friends and others. Each fable has a moral of sorts, a captivating way to inspire children to selfless, gentle, loving behavior. Readers meet a cast of elves, fairies, brownies and sprites with such Shakespearean names as Willy Wisp, Moonbeam and Thistledown, and the children who occasionally dally with them. Thinly disguised morality lessons told in an over-upholstered style, they instruct the audience in the importance of various virtues. This is a nice collection of fairy tales that is sure to please young readers and the adults reading to them alike.

We are no longer children, — but it is not long since we were; and remembering that golden time, when the sun was brighter, the flowers twice as many, the rivers larger, and everything fairer, than it ever has been since, we welcome this book of fables for children. The writer of them was herself a girl of sixteen when they were written, — many, many years ago, — and of course their chief charm is for younger people than we venerable undergraduates. And the children (whose judgment is best) declare loudly for the book, and listen pleased for hours to the adventures of Lily-Bell and Thistledown and the kind little Ripple. But others also can find a pleasure in the love and knowledge of Nature which the book shows, and in its graceful fancies and sweet lessons of charity and patience. The men and women who write stories for children do a greater work for the world than we are wont to think of. Horace praised poets because they formed the "tender mouth" of children, and turned them from the vile to the beautiful. Miss Alcott does not need to "Claim the shelter from her sire of an immortal name," for she has earned praises for herself.

It is three years since we last met the inimitable March sisters and much has changed since we left them as Little Women at the close of the last book. Meg, the eldest and most sensible of the sisters, is preparing to marry Mr Brooke. She no longer works as a governess, instead happily looking after her young twins, Demi and Daisy. Jo, as ever the life and soul of any gathering, goes to live in New York where she works as a governess. She is concerned that Laurie, the March girls' friend and neighbour, may be planning to propose to her and she will have to refuse him because she doesn't love him. Beth, the sweet and kind third daughter, is becoming more ill by the day. She has never recovered from the scarlet fever and now it looks as though her health may go from bad to worse. And Amy, the darling baby of the family, seems finally to be catching up with her elder sisters. She goes on a tour to Europe, developing her considerable artistic skills and will end up surprising them all by marrying someone the family knows very well indeed… An intriguing sequel to the better known Little Women, Good Wives is a more mature book and shows some of the harsher realities the girls face in difficult times. Ultimately it is just as uplifting as its better known prequel with a strikingly modern message of female empowerment.

This book purports to be a record of the adventures of a spirited maiden, who served her country in the hospital with the same cheerful spirit New England girls are noted for manifesting at home. The sketches are almost a literal reproduction of Louisa May Alcott's letters to her family and were hastily written, and with little regard to literary execution, but they are fresh and original, and, still more, they are true, and they appeared at just the time the public wanted them. Every heart was longing to hear not only from field and camp, but from the hospitals, where sons and brothers were tenderly cared for. The generous, hopeful spirit with which Miss Alcott entered into the work was recognized as that which animated the brave corps of women who answered so promptly to their country's call, and every loyal and loving heart vibrated in unison with the strings she touched so skillfully.

Merely to intimate that are other stories by Miss Alcott than 'Little Women' will be sufficient to set the world of juvenile readers on tip-toe with pleased expectation, and those who are fortunate enough to become the possessors of "Jack and Jill" will surely not be disappointed. If it is not equal to " Little Women," it at least surpasses all other stories from the same pen, in that delightfully real manner of painting child-life which has made the author's name a household word not only in England and America, but in France, where her works have been translated and met with a wide sale. In the days when good juvenile literature is so general, it is pleasant to meet with books of such exceptional merit — books which may already be fairly ranked as classics. "Jack and Jill" is undoubtedly one of the best stories for young people.

Jack and Jill Louisa May Alcott - This carefully crafted ebook: "Jack and Jill (Children's Classic)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Jack and Jill: A Village Story is a children's book. It takes place in a small New England town after the Civil War. The story of two good friends named Jack and Janey, Jack and Jill tells of the aftermath of a serious sledding accident. Extract: ""Clear the lulla!" was the general cry on a bright December afternoon, when all the boys and girls of Harmony Village were out enjoying the first good snow of the season. Up and down three long coasts they went as fast as legs and sleds could carry them. One smooth path led into the meadow, and here the little folk congregated; one swept across the pond, where skaters were darting about like water-bugs; and the third, from the very top of the steep hill, ended abruptly at a rail fence on the high bank above the road." Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was an American novelist and poet best known as the author of the classic Little Women and its sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. Alcott was an abolitionist and a feminist.

Louisa May Alcott, more famously known for her „Little Women” series, takes a familiar nursery rhyme and creates a whole novel out of it in one of her last books „Jack and Jill: A Village Story”. The story follows the lives of two 13-year-old neighbors, Jack and Jill, in the fictional Harmony Village. They go sledding on the first day of the season whereupon their adventurous natures and competitiveness get the better of them. After sledding down a particularly treacherous slope, both are seriously injured. Patience and sweetness of temperament aren’t Jack and Jill’s strong suits, and both struggle at times to control their tempers. Luckily they have the influence of their sweet mothers and a group of steadfast friends to show them the virtues of patience and fill their days with the joys of Christmas preparations, a theatrical production and many other imaginative events. As an early forerunner of the „tough love” philosophy of child rearing, „Jack and Jill” is indeed an interesting and entertaining read.

Jo's Boys follows the progress of the Plumfield Boys (Jo Bhaer's idyllic school), ten years on. Now college students, the boys have evolved into complex creatures. Falling in love and making their way in life, they are faced with trials and tribulations. Emil's career as a sailor runs into trouble as he is shipwrecked on his first voyage as second mate. Dan goes west to seek his fortune but soon finds himself in prison, but also in love with the unobtainable Bess - Amy's beautiful daughter. Nat embarks on a musical career in Europe and thus leaves behind his Daisy. Tommy takes on medical school. Throughout it all Jo presides over her brood, counselling, comforting and guiding her 'boys'. Touching, moving and tumultuous, this is Alcott's writing at its best, with the reader heavily invested in her complex characters and their fate.

It was simply impossible to hide any longer the melancholy fact that Miss Alcott's ' Little Men ' were growing up; they have refused to remain the charming boys they were when we read about them in said book. Like other boys of the same generation, they were fast becoming men, and we shall soon lose sight of them in the crowded ranks of mature life. It is very pleasant, therefore, to have another glimpse of them in 'Jo's Boys and How They Turned Out.' Of course everybody who knew 'Little Men' felt that with such a training and such surroundings they could not but turn out well, but everybody will rejoice to read the record of their growth and progress toward manhood. Their later story will be read by the same readers who were fascinated by the earlier record of their mingled sobriety and mischief, for the very good reason that these readers have grown up with the boys themselves. Miss Alcott has not lost her skill, and she makes her older boys quite as interesting and charming as the younger boys were. Altogether, her last volume, like its predecessors, is pre-eminently natural, healthful, and fascinating. It is one of the books for young people that long remained current at the bookstores.

In 'Jo's Boys and How They Turned Out,' Louisa May Alcott continues the literary legacy of her beloved characters created in 'Little Women.' The novel follows the lives of Jo March's young boys as they navigate the challenges of growing up, taking on responsibilities, and finding their place in the world. Alcott's writing style remains engaging and emotionally resonant, capturing the essence of coming-of-age themes with a blend of wit and wisdom. Set in the literary context of 19th-century America, the novel explores themes of family, friendship, and personal growth against the backdrop of social change. Alcott's attention to character development and moral lessons makes this book a timeless classic for readers of all ages. Louisa May Alcott's own experiences growing up in a progressive and intellectual household likely influenced her ability to create relatable characters and poignant storylines in 'Jo's Boys and How They Turned Out.' With a keen insight into human nature, Alcott skillfully weaves together a narrative that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys classic literature, coming-of-age stories, and rich character-driven narratives that stand the test of time.

Better known for her novels „Little Women” and „Little Men”, Louisa May Alcott continued the story of her feisty protagonist Jo in this final novel chronicling the adventures and misadventures of the March family. It is the only Alcott novel that has not had a film adaption. Originally published in 1886, two years before Ms. Alcott’s death, Jo’s boys follows the lives of the young men readers came to love and cherish in its prequel. In it, we learn the fates of Jo’s sons Rob and Teddy, along with the other boys at Plumfield Estate School. Each boy must learn to deal with death, love, heartbreak, disappointment and the consequences of their actions. Entertaining, surprising, and overall a joy to read, Jo’s boys is nevertheless shaded by a bittersweet tone, for with it Alcott brought her wonderful series to an end.

Originally published under the title „Proverb Stories” in 1882 by Louisa May Alcott, this collection of sweet stories with a high moral tone includes: „Kitty’s Class Day”, „Aunt Kipp, Psyche’s Art”, „A Country Christmas”, „On Picket Duty”, „The Baron’s Gloves”, „My Red Cap”, and „What the Bells Saw and Said”. Using different characters in each story, she has portrayed various aspects of life brilliantly. It is a collection with lots of moralistic and didactical ideas. Using proverbs as heading for her stories she has presented profoundly didactic tales. Louisa May Alcott was an American novelist who, in the mid-1860s, wrote passionate, fiery novels and sensational stories. She also produced wholesome stories for children, and after their positive reception, she did not generally return to creating works for adults. Alcott continued to write until her death.
